The Knights of the Order of St. John set Malta on a course to become a strategic Mediterranean port.  In fact, the area around the Grand Harbour grew into a bustling centre of activity amid craftsmen and associated trades.

When the British Empire designated Malta as its Mediterranean Naval Headquarters, the area's importance flourished as many ships relied more on Malta's docks.

This particular facet of history is intriguingly interwoven with a more colourful aspect.  Let us take you on a private tour that unravels the tales, anecdotes, and mystery of what went on behind the scenes.  From tales of promiscuous Knights who ditched their chastity vote to yarns about the seamen and army men who stopped on the Maltese shores and found their entertainment in Valletta's Strait Street, our tour guide will immerse you in the vibrant past of this zone.

Courtesans and Barmaids is a captivating private tour about the nightlife of days gone by.

Detailed Overview

Courtesans and Barmaids is a private tour that takes a peek into a particular past that was only whispered about in the past centuries.  On this short tour, we will take you off the beaten track to the lower part of Valletta, on the Grand Harbour side, and then proceed to Strait Street, a very narrow street in Valletta, whose walls have witnessed more stories than we can ever bring to light.

The Knights, gentlemen of noble birth, had sworn to conduct their lives gallantly according to the chivalric code, but living in Valletta among the people meant also living close to temptation, and some high-ranking Knights even kept courtesans.   Your tour guide will unravel the tales of the Knights' clandestine affairs that saw the Knights discard their chastity vows and give in to debauchery.

With the arrival of the British, the ports' importance increased, and their far-flung empire across the globe meant that many of the British fleet often docked in Malta for services.  This brought a swarm of naval, army officers and seamen.  During this epoch, Strait Street's exuberant activity peaked as the men found their way to what was nicknamed 'The Gut' of the Mediterranean.  Bars and clubs were an everyday night-time attraction with music, dancing, revelry and eventually more seedy activities.

As you tour the area, you will notice that the regeneration has kept the historic charm, and today's cafes, restaurants, and venues offer an eclectic ambience.  This private tour ends close to the City Centre, and from here, you can explore the capital city on your own.
