Detailed Overview
Aimed at the traveller who has never delved into the rich history of the island of Malta, this tour is meant literally like a voyage of discovery, opening the doors of history to give a thorough understanding of why Malta is the diverse melting pot that it is today.
A walking tour of Valletta's historic centre will bring us right into the middle of the story of the Knights of the Order, who arrived on the island after their sojourn in Rhodes and, upon finding the island rather barren and raw, set about building a new base for their order. Valletta is precisely that. It has often been described as 'a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen'. The building of the city itself, the Auberges in Valletta and the Co-Cathedral of St. John are monuments that testify that the Knights ushered in a new era in Malta and changed its architectural landscape forever. While in Valletta, there is the option to visit the Co-Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece renowned for its ornate Baroque interior and magnificent works of art.
Alternatively, you can take a walking tour of Vittoriosa, Malta’s maritime city. Discovering the town is like opening a history book, where you step back in time, wandering along the cobblestone streets and alleyways, strolling around the fortifications and gazing at the city's medieval, Baroque and Renaissance architecture.
You will visit the enchanting city of Mdina with your private tour guide. Malta's old city exudes medieval charm and timeless beauty. Walking through its gates is like taking a step back in time. Wandering along the streets lined with the residences and palaces of Malta's old nobility, you will also understand why Mdina is known as the 'Silent City' while admiring the splendid Baroque architecture and medieval nuances that have remained intact.
Further on our journey, we will visit the picturesque fishing village of Marsaxlokk on the southeastern side of the island. The vibrant waterfront, colourful fishing boats, and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere are yet another facet of Malta that needs to be experienced. Marsaxlokk's charm extends beyond its fishing heritage, and you can enjoy a stroll along the waterfront or dine at one of the restaurants.
Along the way, we will make a photo stop at Blue Grotto.Blue Grotto is a natural sea cave near the village of Zurrieq. The crystalline azure waters contrast with the limestone formations, making it a popular destination for many. On calm days, you can enjoy a 20-minute but mesmerising boat trip around the cave. As the sunlight refracts through the water, it casts ethereal shades of blue and green that illuminate the caves in a magical glow.
Our tour would only be complete after we explore the megalithic temple of Ħaġar Qim. Dating back over 5000 years, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a500complex and impressive temple structure that is not only characterised by the large boulders and intricate carvings. The site is particularly intriguing because Ħaġar Qim is aligned with the solstices, while the Mnajdra Temple, located about 500 meters away, is aligned with the equinoxes. Beyond all the historical and religious significance, the temple lies amid scenic Maltese countryside with breathtaking sea views.
