Enriching our standard Valletta Walking Tour is the additional tour of the magnificent St. John Co-Cathedral, where you'll have the opportunity to delve into the fascinating history and breathtaking richness of this church that served as the Knights' former Conventual Church.
Built on the design of the Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar, the austere exterior is in direct contrast with the Baroque splendour inside. The church was built in five years, and the Knights, who were keen to transform their conventual church into a masterpiece, kept embellishing it for more than two centuries. Top artists, sculptors and craftsmen were commissioned to adorn its interior, and there is a work of art everywhere you turn.
One of the highlights of the co-cathedral is Caravaggio's Masterpiece Beheading of St. John the Baptist, an iconic painting in the style of the master that is famous for its intensity, drama and realism.
After the tour concludes, you have the option to extend your visit to the church and explore at your own leisure. It is important to note that entrance tickets to the Co-Cathedral are not included in our price but can be easily bought on the day.
