Detailed Overview
Getting to Gozo with our private tour guide involves driving to Ċirkewwa, where you will take the ferry to Gozo. Gozo is only reached by ferry, which is a 30-minute trip. Along the way, you will set sight on yet another island of the Maltese archipelago, Comino. You'll notice the imposing coastal towner on the island meant to safeguard against the pirates that sailed these waters. Alternatively, if you’re staying in Valletta or Vittoriosa, it might be more convenient to use the fast ferry service (weather permitting), which leaves Valletta (Lascaris Wharf Terminal) and makes it to Gozo in less than 45 minutes.
Once in Gozo, we will start our private tour by following a trail that takes us to various locations, including the Ġgantija Temples. Deriving from the word 'ġgant', the name refers to the 'giants', that would have moved the massive boulders in an incredible feat of engineering. The temples of Ġgantija, perched high on a hilltop with sweeping island vistas, remain to this day shrouded in mystery.
Another of Gozo's highlights is the Citadel. Even today, the fortified city seems to be standing on guard over the island of Gozo. Built to protected the inhabitants, who ran for shelter within its walls every time the corsairs attacked, the Citadel has stood the tests of time. Upon entering you will lay your gaze on Gozo's cathedral, a Baroque masterpiece and as we walk through its maze of narrow streets and explore the imposing bastions, you will glimpse the city's military importance.
Once in the area, we will explore Victoria, a town soaked with historic, cultural and religious significance. The city's old quarter has the old-age charm of the vernacular, which lies side by side with many churches and chapels and is close to picturesque piazzas.
We'll move to the western side of the island to visit Ta' Pinu Basilica, a revered place of devotion. In the middle of the Gozitan terraced fields, the church is a testament to faith and a showcase of architectural prowess and exceptional stone sculpture craftsmanship.
Our Gozo private tour will not miss on the Salt Pans. Still in use for sea salt production, the area offers a stunning view of contrasting rocky pools against the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. Lunch break on this tour will occur either in Marsalforn or Xlendi. Both areas are fishing villages renowned for their fish fare, and dining at the seafront is always a memorable experience.
We will return to Malta using the fast-ferry (weather permitting).
